The short answer
The Judas Swing is the false move at the London or New York session open that clears stops before the real move of the day. It typically pushes above the Asian range high or below the Asian range low, triggering breakout traders and stop-losses, then reverses hard. Three parts: fake move, reversal, real move. The sweep is a session-specific version of the liquidity grab from Lesson 18.
Why this is the sweep you can plan for
Lesson 18 taught the liquidity sweep anywhere on the chart. The Judas Swing is the sweep you know is coming. Session opens produce the same behaviour day after day: an early push that clears liquidity, then the real move.
The reason is structural. Overnight sessions (Asia, Sydney) build a tight range. When the London or NY session begins, institutional flow enters and needs liquidity to fill size. The Asian range is where the retail stops sit. The Judas Swing is the open clearing that range before the day's real move begins.

Judas Swing methodology cross-checked against ICT session framework, the London/NY open behaviour documented in Day Trading and Swing Trading the Currency Market (Lien), Smart Money Concepts documentation, and the published intraday literature on opening range behaviour. The three-part structure and the session-open characteristic are established in forex microstructure research, not just retail education.
Every intraday trader has watched the London open push 30 pips one way, then reverse and trend 80 pips the other way. The name is colourful, but the mechanic is simple. The open clears the Asian range. Then it goes where it always wanted to go. This lesson teaches you to stop being swept and start trading the swing.
Key takeaways
The Judas Swing is a false move at the London or NY open followed by the real move.
It targets the Asian range — the overnight range that builds before the session opens.
Three parts: fake move, reversal, real move.
The fake move pushes above the Asian high or below the Asian low to trigger breakout traders and stops.
London open (07:00–10:00 GMT) is the most common Judas window.
NY open (13:00–15:00 GMT) is the second window, especially after a quiet London session.
The real move often begins after the reversal closes back inside the Asian range.
Judas ≠ a real breakout. The reversal candle is the tell.
The best entries happen at the FVG, OB, or Fib level left by the false move.
Not every session has a Judas. Strong trends often skip it. Sit out if the structure is not there.
A Judas Swing is a session-open move that appears to be the start of a trend, then reverses and delivers the actual move in the opposite direction. The name comes from the false kiss of betrayal — the market kisses the breakout trader, then takes their stop. The mechanic is not betrayal. It is liquidity.
The Judas typically pushes above the Asian range high or below the Asian range low. This triggers two groups of orders:
Breakout traders buying the high or selling the low.
Stop-losses sitting just beyond the range boundary.
Both groups produce one-sided order flow — buy orders if the high breaks, sell orders if the low breaks. That liquidity is what the session needs to fill institutional size in the opposite direction. The Judas provides the fuel. The real move consumes it.
THE ANATOMY OF A JUDAS SWING
Asian range · false push above the high · reversal back inside · real move down
Fake up, real down. The Judas cleared liquidity for the actual move.
Common mistake
Trading the first move after the London open. The first move is often the Judas. Waiting for the reversal — a candle that closes back inside the Asian range — is the discipline that separates the trade from the trap.
Why session opens produce it
Session opens are liquidity events. When London opens at 07:00 GMT or New York at 13:00 GMT, a wall of institutional flow enters the market at once. That flow needs counterparties. The overnight Asian range is where those counterparties sit.
Here is the mechanism in three steps:
Overnight, the Asian session prints a range. Low volatility. Tight highs and lows. Retail traders build positions with stops just beyond the boundaries.
Session open hits. New flow enters. The first push typically sweeps the Asian range boundary — triggering breakout buyers if the high breaks, or breakout sellers if the low breaks.
The reversal happens. The sweep clears the liquidity. The real flow enters in the opposite direction. Price trends for the session.
The name is colourful, the mechanic is structural
"Judas Swing" sounds conspiratorial. It is not. Session opens produce a predictable liquidity event. The Asian range collects stops. The open sweeps them. The rest of the day trends.
Understanding the mechanism removes the emotion. You are not being betrayed. You are watching a scheduled liquidity event. When you see it, you have a decision: get swept or trade the swing.
The three-part structure
Every Judas has three components. Learn them and you can identify the swing in real time.
The three-part Judas structure
01
The fake move — the sweep.
The first 15–60 minutes of the session push above the Asian high (or below the Asian low). Breakout traders and stops are triggered. This is the Judas itself.
02
The reversal — the close back inside.
Price closes back inside the Asian range. Ideally the reversal candle is strong — a large body closing inside the range. This is the tell. No close, no Judas.
03
The real move — the trend.
Price trends in the opposite direction of the fake move. The strongest moves break the opposite Asian boundary within the next few hours. This is the trade.
THE THREE-PART STRUCTURE · SWEEP, REVERSAL, REAL MOVE
Each part has a specific tell · the reversal close is the trigger
Three parts. The reversal close is what turns the sweep into a trade.
London vs New York
Two sessions produce the Judas most reliably. Both open at a scheduled time with a wall of institutional flow.
Session
Window (GMT)
Character
London open
07:00 – 10:00
Most common Judas. Highest volume. The Asian range is the target.
NY open
13:00 – 15:00
Second window. Often sweeps the London session high/low. NY session range or London range is the target.
Asia open
23:00 – 01:00
Rarely produces a Judas. Ranges are too tight and volume too thin.
London is the primary window. The Asian range has been building for six to eight hours, stops are clustered, and the London session brings the largest single-session volume of the day. If you are going to watch for one Judas, watch London.
New York is the second window. If London already delivered a clean trend, the NY open often just continues it. The best NY Judas setups come after a quiet London session — when the London range has built tight boundaries that the NY open can sweep.
The Asian range — the target
The Asian range is the price band that prints during the Tokyo session. It has three characteristics that make it a perfect liquidity pool:
Tight. Volatility is low. The high and low are close together.
Visible. Every session trader marks the same two levels. The boundaries are obvious.
Littered with stops. Range traders buy the low, sell the high. Their stops sit just beyond the boundaries. Breakout traders place orders at the boundaries themselves.
The Asian high and low are the two most-watched levels before the London open. Whichever boundary breaks first in the London session is usually the Judas side.
Judas vs real breakout
The hardest part of trading the Judas is knowing it is a Judas and not a real breakout. There is one key difference.
Feature
Judas Swing
Real breakout
Close after the pierce
Closes back inside the range
Closes beyond the boundary
Speed of reversal
Fast — 1 to 3 candles
Slow — no reversal at all
Follow-through
Trend continues on the opposite side
Trend continues on the breakout side
Volume
Spike on the sweep, then decline
Sustained on the breakout
The single tell: did price close back inside the range? A sweep that closes back inside is a Judas. A sweep that closes beyond is a break. Wait for the close of the first hourly candle after the open — that candle decides which one you have.
The reversal candle is the tell. No close, no Judas.
Judas + sweep + FVG + OB
The Judas is a specific case of the sweep — a session-timed one. All four tools stack together for the complete setup.

Four layers stacked. The Judas is a sweep with a scheduled trigger.
When Judas swings fail
When Judas swings fail
When the range is too wide. If the Asian range is already large, a Judas needs an even larger push to sweep it. Wide ranges reduce the probability of a clean setup. Wait for a tight Asian range or skip the session.
On high-impact news days. NFP, CPI, and central bank decisions override any session pattern. The Judas is a scheduled liquidity event. News is an unscheduled one. Sit out.
When the higher-timeframe trend is strong. In a strong daily uptrend, the London open often just continues up — no Judas. Not every session has one. If the trend is dominant, the sweep does not need to reverse.
When you trade the first move. The first push after the London open is the Judas. Trading the first move is trading the trap. Wait for the reversal close before committing.
On Mondays and Fridays. Monday opens often continue Friday's close without a session reset. Friday afternoons lack follow-through. The best Judas days are Tuesday through Thursday.
If you remember nothing else: the Judas is a scheduled liquidity event. If the schedule is compromised, so is the trade.

Judas Swing validation checklist
1. Session timing. London open (07:00–10:00 GMT) or NY open (13:00–15:00 GMT).
2. Asian range is tight. Wide ranges reduce the setup quality.
3. Higher-timeframe agrees. Daily direction supports the real move.
4. Sweep is meaningful. At least 5–10 pips beyond the boundary on FX majors.
5. Reversal closes back inside. This is the trigger. No close, no Judas.
6. Entry at the FVG or OB. Not at the reversal candle directly.
7. Stop beyond the Judas wick. Give the sweep room.
8. Target at the opposite boundary. The real move often breaks it.
In one box
Judas Swing = fake move at the session open, followed by the real move.
Targets the Asian range. High or low swept, then reversed.
Three parts: fake move, reversal close, real move.
London open is the primary window. NY open is the second.
Best days: Tuesday through Thursday. Skip Monday and Friday afternoon.
The reversal close is the tell. No close back inside, no Judas.
Entry at the FVG or OB left by the false move.
Stop beyond the sweep wick. Not at the boundary.
Target the opposite boundary. The real move breaks it.
Not every session. Strong trends skip the Judas.

Question 01 of 05
What is a Judas Swing?
Correct: B. The Judas is a false move at the London or NY session open that pushes past the Asian range boundary, triggers stops and breakout traders, then reverses and delivers the real move in the opposite direction.
Question 02 of 05
What is the three-part structure of a Judas?
Correct: C. The fake move is the sweep of the Asian range. The reversal is the candle that closes back inside. The real move is the trend that follows in the opposite direction.
Question 03 of 05
Which session produces the most reliable Judas Swing?
Correct: A. London is the primary window. It has the largest single-session volume and the Asian range has been building all night. NY open is the second window, but London delivers the cleanest setups.
Question 04 of 05
What is the key tell that separates a Judas Swing from a real breakout?
Correct: D. The reversal close is the tell. A Judas closes back inside the Asian range — the sweep failed to hold. A real breakout closes beyond the boundary and continues. Wait for the first hourly close after the session open.
Question 05 of 05
Where should you enter a Judas trade?
Correct: B. The false move leaves an FVG or an order block. Entering on the retest of that zone gives you a tight stop and a clear invalidation. Entering at the sweep itself is what gets you trapped — that is exactly what the Judas is designed to do to breakout traders.
