Read this first — futures, not MT5: This is a futures-only prop firm. There is no MetaTrader, no spot forex and no CFDs. Our signal levels are quoted on spot/CFD prices, which differ from futures prices. Index and gold signals can be traded here only as their approximate futures equivalents (US500 → ES/MES, US30 → YM/MYM, XAUUSD → GC/MGC) with levels translated by you — our forex pairs are not practical here. We publish this review for members who trade futures anyway; it is not a recommendation to run our signals on this firm.

Overview

Topstep invented the funded-trader evaluation. Operating from Chicago since 2012, it is the longest-running futures prop firm in existence and the model every other firm copied. It runs exclusively on regulated CME-group futures — no forex CFDs, no MetaTrader.

The path has three stages: the Trading Combine (a one-step evaluation billed as a monthly subscription from about $49/month), the Express Funded Account (a simulated funded account that pays real cash), and — at Topstep's discretion after consistent performance — a Live Funded Account on genuine exchange capital.

Be aware before you compare: Topstep overhauled its rules through 2026. New traders since January 12, 2026 get a 90/10 split from day one (the old "100% of your first $10K" applies only to grandfathered accounts), the Express Funded Account split into Standard and Consistency payout paths in February, and per-payout caps were revised again in April. Any Topstep review older than a few months is describing a different firm.

The Trading Combine

How It Works
Evaluation1 step, no time limit
BillingMonthly subscription, auto-renews
Sizes$50K / $100K / $150K
From~$49/month ($50K)
Activation~$149 per funded account, or a pricier no-activation path
Risk modelTrailing Maximum Loss Limit
Daily Loss LimitYes — enforced
Funded Payouts (2026 policy)
Split (new traders)90/10, per trader
Standard path5 winning days of $150+ per payout
Consistency path3 days, best day ≤ 40% of net profit
Per-payout capRoughly $2K–$6K by size/path
MethodsACH, Aeropay, Wise, wire
GrandfatheredPre-2026: 100% of first $10K
The rule that matters most: the trailing Maximum Loss Limit follows your highest end-of-day balance upward and is enforced in real time against your equity — a single bad intraday spike can end the account even if you would have recovered by the close. This is a fundamentally different risk model from FTMO-style static drawdowns, and it punishes wide stops.

How This Works With Our Signals

Honestly: only partially. Topstep has no MT5 and no spot forex. Of our eight FVG instruments, only the index and gold signals have practical futures equivalents (US500 → ES/MES, US30 → YM/MYM, XAUUSD → GC/MGC). Futures quote differently from the spot/CFD prices our levels are published on, so you would translate every level yourself and accept basis differences. Our six forex pairs are effectively out.

Apex VIP Quant is not compatible with Topstep. Several Quant modules hold positions for multiple days including over weekends; Topstep requires accounts to be flat at the end of each session. That is a structural mismatch, not a sizing problem.

The trailing drawdown changes the math. Our published stops assume a static risk budget. Against a trailing Maximum Loss Limit that ratchets up with your best end-of-day balance, the same stop distance consumes a growing share of your remaining room. If you trade our index signals here, size smaller than you would on a static-drawdown firm.

We publish this review because members ask about Topstep constantly — it is the most trusted name in futures. But if your goal is to trade our signals on funded capital, an MT5 firm (FTMO, FundedNext, The5ers, FundingPips) is the correct tool.

Payouts & Trust

Trust: Fourteen years of continuous operation from a US headquarters, thousands of funded traders, and no credible pattern of payout disputes. On longevity, nothing in futures prop touches it.

The 2026 friction: the payout side got more complex, not less. New traders lost the 100%-of-first-$10K policy, per-payout caps were reduced on some account types in April 2026, and repeat payouts require both winning-day counts and a minimum balance since the last withdrawal. The money is real; extracting it takes patience and rule-reading.

Pros & Cons

The longest track record in futures prop — operating since 2012
One-step evaluation with no time limit
Regulated CME markets, US-based company
Low monthly entry (~$49) — cancel any time
Strong education, coaching and community (TopstepTV)
Native multi-account copier for your own accounts, at no cost
Futures only — no MT5, no spot forex, most of our signals don't map
Trailing Max Loss Limit is unforgiving vs static drawdowns
No overnight/weekend holding — rules out our Quant book entirely
2026 payout policy is more complex: caps, dual paths, split downgrade for new traders
Subscription renews monthly until you pass or cancel
VPS, VPN and third-party copiers banned
Our Verdict on Topstep

As a futures prop firm, Topstep is the benchmark: the oldest, the most educational, and the most likely to still exist in five years. If you are a futures trader on your own strategies, it deserves its reputation despite the tighter 2026 payout rules.

As a home for our signals, it is the wrong tool. Two of eight instruments map (as approximations), the Quant book is structurally excluded by the flat-by-close rule, and the trailing drawdown penalizes exactly the defined-stop style we publish. Members who trade futures independently: solid choice. Members who want funded capital for our signals: choose an MT5 firm.

SIGNAL COMPATIBILITY — LIMITED

Topstep is futures-only: no MT5, no spot forex. Only our index and gold signals have approximate futures equivalents, with levels you must translate yourself. Apex VIP Quant is not compatible — its multi-day weekend-holding modules conflict with Topstep's flat-by-close requirement. For funded accounts that run our signals natively, see our MT5 prop firm reviews →
